MTD + spreadsheets
You may be able to keep your spreadsheet.
HMRC says spreadsheets can still be used for records, but compatible software must link those records into the MTD process.
What “bridging software” does
Bridging software sits between your spreadsheet records and HMRC. Rather than replacing the way you keep records, it provides the digital connection needed for submissions.
Current routes we have checked
| Product | Standard price | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ANNA spreadsheet bridging | £0 | ANNA provides an MTD spreadsheet template and says quarterly updates can be uploaded and filed free after creating an account and connecting HMRC. |
| Coconut MTD Bridging | £49.99 a year | Designed for sole traders and landlords who want to keep spreadsheets; supports self-employment and property income and multiple income sources. |
When a bridge is a good fit
It can make sense if your spreadsheet is already accurate, you do not need invoicing or bookkeeping automation and you mainly want the MTD submission layer.
When it may be the wrong fit
If record keeping is currently difficult, a bookkeeping package that imports bank transactions and captures receipts may save more time. Also check that the software can handle the final tax return and every other income source you need to report, not just quarterly updates.
HMRC says you can use more than one software product, but together they must do everything required for your MTD records, quarterly updates and tax return.
